Medicare Advantage Plans are available for the entire calendar year. But you can only join or leave a Medicare Advantage plan during the Initial Enrollment Period, the Annual Election Period, the Open Enrollment Period or a Special Election Period.  Starting in 2011 , you can begin a Medicare Advantage plan when you are new to Medicare and you can switch your Medicare Advantage plan between November 15th and December 31 or if you qualify because of special circumstances (if you move out of your Medicare Advantage coverage area or your plan is no longer offered in your area). In the fall of 2011, the Annual Election Period will change to October 15, 2011 to December 7, 2011.
