Minnesota Medicare Supplement Plans There are more than 5.2 million people living in the North Star State of Minnesota (2008 US Census Bureau estimate) and 12.5 % of these residents are over 65 years of age. This is just under the national average of 12.8% of US residents over 65. If you are a member of this group and are receiving Social Security you were automatically enrolled in Medicare. What you need to know is that Standard Medicare Insurance does not cover all your health care expenses. Minnesota Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, also known as Minnesota Medigap Insurance is private health insurance that is designed to supplement Standard Medicare Insurance. The Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) encouraged the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) to modernize the Medigap insurance marketplace. NAIC developed a revised set of Medigap Insurance Plans. These changes become effective from June 2010 and will delete some existing plans and add others. Minnesota is one of three states that offer different options from the A-N plans. Minnesota Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are Standardized Unlike most states, Minnesota has two types of Medigap policies available. Basic (optional riders may be added) and Extended Basic, which include all of the Basic riders. Minnesota’s Medigap policies equal or exceed national standardized plans A-N. The policies cover gaps in Original Medicare and some also have benefits that Original Medicare does not cover, for example, health care while traveling outside the U.S. Since Minnesota Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are standardized, you will get the same coverage for the same plan with any insurance company you choose. Whether you choose Mutual of Omaha Core it provides the same coverage as a Blue Cross Blue Shield Basic or Extended Basic, Humana Basic or Extended Basic, or any other company that offers Medigap coverage. As long as you choose the same plan, the only difference will be the cost. Premiums can vary by as much as 200% for the same coverage. The Minnesota Senior Federation (1-877-645-0261, 651-645-0261) can provide a list of approved suppliers of Medigap plans and details of each plan. The insurance companies are not required to offer all the available plan options. This makes it critically important for you to look at multiple Medicare Supplement Insurance Companies to find the best price possible for the exact same coverage. Choose the Plan that Fits Your Needs In order for you to choose the best plan, one which suits your needs at the lowest cost, you should review your current situation and take a look the different types of Minnesota Medigap Plans that are offered. Since your state is a little different in what is available, it can be a difficult process. We can help you with this process and get you the best cost quote from all the insurance providers in Minnesota. Your goal is to determine which plan is best for your particular needs. We help people with this every day and are familiar with the most current insurance information in Minnesota. Remember, these plans are the same from provider to provider. The only difference is the cost.
